“Obamanomics Is A Recipe For Recession”

“Yet despite his obvious general intelligence, and uplifting and motivational eloquence, Sen. Obama reveals this startling economic illiteracy in his policy proposals and economic pronouncements.” — Michael Boskin
“Obamanomics Is A Recipe For Recession”
By Michael J. Boskin

What if I told you that a prominent global political figure in recent months has proposed: abrogating key features of his government’s contracts with energy companies; unilaterally renegotiating his country’s international economic treaties; dramatically raising marginal tax rates on the “rich” to levels not seen in his country in three decades (which would make them among the highest in the world); and changing his country’s social insurance system into explicit welfare by severing the link between taxes and benefits? Rep. John Murtha D, Pa may be on the ropes.

Wouldn’t it be nice.
July 23, 2008
A JAW-dropping political miracle may be on the horizon. No, I’m not talking about the second coming of the Obamessiah. I’m talking about the long-deserved comeuppance of troop-smearing, pork-feasting, scandal-tainted Democratic Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania.
The 18-term congressman’s challenger, staunch conservative Republican newcomer William Russell, raised nearly $670,000 in the second quarter. Earmark king Murtha scraped together a measly $119,000.
Russell’s underdog campaign bested Murtha without the perks of incumbency, national name recognition, big PAC donations or mainstream media support.
Even more amazing: The challenger, a Desert Storm veteran and Army reservist who survived the 9/11 Pentagon attack, wasn’t even publicly campaigning during the quarter. Russell, 45, is on active duty with the Army until after Aug. 1 and is barred from actively campaigning until then.
If all that didn’t make this enough of an inspiring story: In February, a Pennsylvania judge ruled that Russell had failed to collect enough signatures to make the primary ballot. But he refused to give up on his goal of defeating Murtha. The GOP neophyte persevered on a shoestring budget and won more than 4,000 write-in votes in the spring to earn a spot on the general-election ballot. Russell’s campaign manager, veteran GOP activist Peg Luksik, says most second-quarter donations were less than $50.
Russell’s clear on where he stands. “I am a conservative,” he says in his defining campaign statement. “I believe in the sovereignty and security of this one nation, under God. I believe the primary role of government is to provide for the common defense and a legal framework to protect families and individual liberty.” Read more
Are you tired of George W’s War?
July 23, 2008
From Investor’s Business Daily
No one likes war. War is a horrific affair, bloody and expensive. Sending our men and women into battle to perhaps die or be maimed is an unconscionable thought.
Yet some wars need to be waged, and someone needs to lead. The citizenry and Congress are often ambivalent or largely opposed to any given war. It’s up to our leader to convince them. That’s why we call the leader "Commander in Chief."
George W.’s war was no different. There was lots of resistance to it. Many in Congress were vehemently against the idea. The Commander in Chief had to lobby for legislative approval. Read more
Cochran, Wicker Continue Calling for Increased Domestic Energy Production
July 23, 2008
WASHINGTON
U.S. Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, both R-Miss., today went to the Senate floor to urge their colleagues to pass legislation that increases domestic energy production in response to record-high gas prices. The senators made their remarks during debate on legislation intended to curb oil speculators which is currently being considered. Cochran, Wicker and a number of their colleagues want the Senate to use this opportunity to broaden the debate and allow for votes on amendments that would increase the production of American energy sources.
The following are excerpts of the senators’ floor comments: Read more
Musgrove Commercial Shot in Canton Subject of Scrutiny
July 23, 2008

July 23, 2008
The Wicker for Senate campaign will file charges with the FEC against opponent Ronnie Musgrove for alleged violation of FEC finance regulations over a campaign commercial shot in Canton.
The commercial was shot on the grounds and inside a boardroom at the Madison County Courthouse on July 9. One issue over the commercial is whether the funding and participation of producers from the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee constitute a violation. However, that issue is compounded by whether the producers of the ad had proper written permission to film inside the courthouse. Read more
The dog days of summer will be giving way to Ole Miss football shortly.
July 21, 2008
Yes, I’m one of those Ole Miss fans. Even though it’s hotter than a pepper patch right now in northeast Mississippi, it won’t be long until we see the start of a new coaching era at Ole Miss.
Now, I wasn’t a big fan of Houston Nutt when it was first announced he was coming as our head coach but I’m slowly and surely coming over. Even though he has a lot of experience as an SEC coach, I was never impressed with his efforts at Arkansas. He had a roller coaster career there and barely a winning record against the SEC. His teams had a lot of controversy along with some ill fated athletes. His record as disciplinarian of his players was always a question. Read more

New Gallup Poll shows Congress approval rating has dropped again.
July 18, 2008

At an all time low, according to the latest Gallup Poll, Congress will most likely drop even further by sitting idly by and not voting to drill for more oil. Thanks Nancy (I never met a plastic surgeon I didn’t like) Pelosi.
Democrats Vote to Kill Jobs, Block Energy Production
July 18, 2008
As Energy Crisis Perpetuates, Democrats Pass Bill to Block Liquefied Natural Gas Facility
Washington- Democrats have now gone beyond just blocking future development of domestic energy sources, and yesterday passed a bill that will actually block the construction of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility by placing the label “wild and scenic” to the lower Taunton River in Massachusetts. In so doing, Congressional Democrats would expose the area, which is teeming with the natural wonders of power plants and shipbuilding yards, to heavy-handed government regulations (House Roll Call 506) .
“With the U.S. House of Representatives scheduled today to vote on the designation of the lower Taunton River as part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, shipbuilders and other businesses located on the banks of the waterway are anxiously watching. The designation … would hamper business they say, possibly even leading to closures.” (Fall River Herald News, July 15, 2008)
Democrats had an opportunity to amend the bill and ensure that energy infrastructure would not be banned in this area of the river, however Democrats stood in lock-step with their party leaders to pass this bill, despite the economic impact it would have on the Taunton River community (House Roll Call 506) .
Senator Barack Hussein Obama and Mr. Rezko
July 17, 2008
During his 12 years in politics, Sen. Barack Obama has received nearly three times more campaign cash from indicted businessman, Tony Rezko and his associates, than he has publicly acknowledged, the Chicago Sun-Times has found.
Seven months ago, Obama told the Sun-Times his “best estimate” was that Rezko raised “between $50,000 and $60,000″ during Obama’s political career.
However, Obama has collected at least $168,308 from Rezko and his circle. Additionally, Obama also has taken in an unknown amount of money from people who attended fund-raising events hosted by Rezko since the mid-1990s.
Everything you ever wanted to know about Obama and Rezko.
Sen Roger Wicker (R) campaign alleges federal elections violations by Ronnie Musgrove (D) campaign
July 16, 2008
On Tuesday the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) and Ronnie Musgrove began running a television ad that overtly violates campaign finance laws. Now is time for them to explain their actions.
The Federal Elections Commission (FEC) requires coordination between a campaign and a National Committee like the DSCC not to exceed $180,800. The DSCC ad on behalf of Ronnie Musgrove is valued at an estimated $240,214 (not counting production costs, view coordinated expenditures.) This ad combined with previous coordinated expenditures with the DSCC ($55,133 in first quarter) surpasses the legal limits by $114,547. Read more

Senator Roger Wicker (R) - Congress Should Follow President’s Lead, Lift Deep Sea Energy Ban
July 14, 2008
Following today’s move by President Bush to lift the executive ban on deep sea energy exploration, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., said Congress should move quickly to approve legislation that does the same.
“With today’s presidential action, the congressional moratorium on deep sea energy exploration remains the only thing standing in the way of American consumers and more domestic energy production,” Wicker said. “With record-high gas prices, the American public is in clear support of more American-made energy. Congress should move quickly to lift the ban on America’s deep sea energy reserves in order to place us on the road to energy independence and lower gas prices.” Read more

I was born in the fall of 1951. I remember when James Meredith enrolled at Ole Miss. I remember George Wallace standing on the steps of the University of Alabama. I remember the riots in Little Rock, AR when the school were integrated. I remember the first black students that came to my high school. I’m good friends with one of them today.
I’m not that old. I remember these things.
